The Beaufort Court Zero Emissions Building, Head Office of Renewable Energy Systems in Kings Langley, is exemplary in its exploitation of cutting edge sustainable energy technology. Originally built by Ovaltine in 1928 as an egg farm, it was the first energy sufficient zero emissions commercial building in the world. Five integrated sources of renewable energy – wind turbine, photovoltaics, hybrid photovoltaic / thermal array and seasonal ground heat store, biomass heating and bore hole cooling – are supported by a comprehensive mixed-mode energy saving design. Studio E secured a £0.5m grant from the EU Framework 5 Programme to assist funding.
