The City of London Academy (Southwark) is part of the DCSF funded City Academy programme, with the City of London as prime sponsor in collaboration with London Borough of Southwark. The first academy to be procured through partnering, the new school provides 1200 11-19 year olds from the Bermondsey area with high quality, state of the art facilities. The underlying vision is an Academy based on a culture of high expectation and achievement with a focus on business and enterprise. The design approach sought to underpin this vision with a positive value engineered response addressing an exceptionally difficult site and an agenda of practical and sustainable issues. A striking series of buildings provide a full range of teaching accommodation with all attendant specialist teaching and support facilities. Bold design gestures capture the school’s focus on business and enterprise, echoing the Square Miles’ sponsorship through the City of London. Internal teaching spaces have been created that are stimulating, functional, secure, versatile and responsive to latest educational demands.
