Sports and Leisure
The Park Community Sports Centre provides changing facilities for the artificial surface and turf playing fields, and also includes a reception, kitchen, bar, community room and stores. It was funded by Southwark Council, the Football Foundation and by energy grants from the DTI (Department of Trade and Industry). The new building is physically tied to the site through attachment to retained walls of factory buildings that previously occupied the site. The building takes a low profile, sunk into the ground with change rooms all but covered in excavated earth. Demonstrating advanced low and renewable energy technologies, the facility minimises energy consumption and, uses the potential of the sun and the earth to minimise reliance on fossil fuels. The energy strategy also incorporates high insulation, solar protection, an integrated photovoltaic array, a ground-linked heat pump for water and space heating, and rainwater recycling.
