A 540m2 new 6th Form Extension to supplement the City Academy in Hackney that was originally designed by Studio E Architects and opened in 2009. The massing concept picks up on the established linear dynamic of the original design. Lifted off of the ground to preserve external recreational space, the new accommodation consists of common room facilities at first floor and classrooms at second. The classroom/cellular accommodation is separated away from the existing adjoining sports hall by a double height area with a two storey curtain wall opening views to the west. Punched east facing windows overlook existing trees. A strong use of colour on the cladding follows the original building’s visual vocabulary, with a bias to the yellow spectrum so as to contrast with the existing blues of the sports hall.
