Purbachal New Town is a huge new neighbourhood being developed north east of the city of Dhaka, Bangladesh. The expansion is to cope with the demand for housing and to reduce the pressure on the already crowded city. The project is for a through school – 2 -18 yr olds – to serve the new residents of Purbachal. The Primary and Senior schools are organised as independent schools, however several of the larger facilities are arranged so they can be shared: the all-weather sports pitch, 750 seat auditorium and foyer and the basement bus drop off and parking. The environmental strategy seeks to maximise the use and quality of the courtyard spaces as both learning and recreation spaces. Translucent, tensile canopies keep the sun and rain out but let light in. Mechanically conditioned air delivered to the teachings spaces will be returned to atmosphere via these covered spaces, thereby creating comfortable microclimates isolated from the noise and the pollution of the streets.
