The new leisure centre being developed on the site of the former Central Baths building is one part of the overhaul of Watford Borough Council’s indoor sports facilities being designed by Studio E. The new facility includes a six-lane 25m pool and learner pool together with a four-court sports hall, fitness suite, dance studio and dry change facilities. At the core of the building and offering a dramatic backdrop to the reception areas is a three storey climbing wall. In response to the client’s sustainable agenda, the design demonstrates advanced low and renewable energy technologies with the energy strategy for the facility incorporating high insulation, a roof mounted solar thermal array, ground linked heat pump water and space heating, and rainwater recycling. The building is sited within a Conservation Area. Architecturally the design establishes a civic presence to the culmination of the pedestrianised route from the centre of Watford, and through its choice of materials ensures a level of quality commensurate with its setting.
