The complete redevelopment of the existing sports centre at Woodside is one part of the overhaul of Watford Borough Council’s indoor sports facilities being designed by Studio E. Whilst the existing building is undergoing a complete upgrade of its existing accommodation including the eight court sports hall and squash courts, it is also being significantly extended to include for a new eight lane 25m competition pool and an 8x20m learner pool. Other improvements include the significant enlargement of the health and fitness provision and café facilities within the centre. In response to the client’s sustainable agenda, the design demonstrates advanced low and renewable energy technologies with the energy strategy for the facility incorporating high insulation, a roof mounted solar thermal array, ground linked heat pump water and space heating, and rainwater recycling. Located adjacent to the Woodside Athletics Stadium and the Watford Harriers Club, this building is seen as centre of sporting excellence.
