A radical approach was sought for the energy and environmental design of this new private residence in the Cotswolds. Whilst not taking undue risks, innovatory design and technologies in the field of environmental sustainability are being pursued. The project includes a key worker unit to which the same zero carbon measures will be applied. It anticipates the stated government need for all new housing to be zero carbon by 2016. The environmental design results from optimising ‘passive solar’ measures and combining them with a selection of rationalised and efficient ‘active’ measures. Consideration has been given to such measures as wind turbines, hybrid solar electric and thermal and biofuel generation in preparing a fully integrated strategy.
